As it turns out, you also need to have the binary NVIDIA display
driver installed (I'm using the latest version, 1.0.7174) for this
crash to happen.  There goes any hope of fixing it from our end;
I'll pass this problem on to NVIDIA.  In the meantime, I'll use
the "nv" driver that comes with X -- now if only I could remember
why I switched to the proprietary driver.  (Every year or so,
I discover some horrible bug in the display driver I'm currently
using, and I switch to the other one, forgetting what made me
throw it away the year before. :-)

Still, it would be hear if someone else can reproduce this.  Anyone
here with an NVIDIA graphics card that is willing to contaminate his
system with a binary driver? :-)
