You have to select a font with the proper face.

Then you need a font with a bold face.  FreeType doesn't provide means
for imitating bold.

No.  Bolding a face is a non-trivial operation.  You might try to
experiment with ftsynth.c (this is in src/base of FreeType 2.x).
