Hi everyone

We got the email below on the admin list today, I wanted to forward it to you all as an independent assesment of which projects are actually getting anything done.

Keep up the good work!

I'll contact him this week.

Cheers,

Mark

To Mark Horner,

I am a law professor at Yale, and have in the past decade been writing a
lot on commons based production. More recently my work on non-market
collaborative production has been focused on economic analysis of
productive online collaboration beyond free and open source
software. Relevant pieces are http://www.benkler.org/CoasesPenguin.html
and http://benkler.org/SharingNicely.html.
I am now working on a shorter paper on commons-based strategies for
educational resources. This is part of a broader effort to work more
generally on the extent to which commons-based strategies can be harnessed
towards development goals. As I have been looking around, yours seems to
be the only successful model of collaborative textbooks production for the
K-12 range. The California Open Textbook initiative is, as best I can
tell, a placeholder or idea without substance. Wikibooks is very limited
in its takeoff. The open textbooks site seems inactive for almost a year
now. You, on the other hand, are delivering. I am working my way through
your site to get a better sense of what I understand you to be doing, but
would very much like an opportunity to call you and talk about what you
think you are doing right.
best,
yochai benkler
