Does the word [transition] have any special positive or negative
connotations?
Yes.
If you favor a transition to customize, it has a positive connotation.
On the other hand, if you like using a ~/.emacs file, it has a
negative connotation.
Worse, the word `transition' has a negative connotation if, like me,
you use customize for some features and your ~/.emacs file for others.
Over all, for me, the word conveys the sense that a user will have to
stop combining use of customize part of the time and of a ~/.emacs
file part of the time: `transition' suggests you must either abandon
the ~/.emacs file or abandon use of customize. It suggests a
`transition' from one to the other.
Since customize is intrinsically less efficient for most of my
customizations, and since I cannot use it for many of them (such as
providing new defuns), your choice of the word `transition' suggests
that I will have to abandon the use of customize that I have enjoyed
(mainly setting faces to colors that work on my display and getting
rid of slanted, bold, and italic faces, and the like).
I do not want to transition away from my limited use of customize, yet
this is what I infer are the consequences of your proposal.
Doubtless, you did not intend this, but this is what I understood you
to mean.
