Your compromise seems reasonable, but it can be improved in one respect:
(2) Provide a way for the user to type some text, then hit RET to
send input to the compilation process.
This means that RET should not do compile-goto-error anymore.
It could send input when used at the end of the buffer
and do compile-goto-error when used in the middle.
