    In the middle, I had the problem that the x* commands defined in the
    .gdbinit file in the emacs src dir did not work:

I discovered today that I had failed to check in my changes to
.gdbinit, which define the hookpost-run command.  So I did so.  That
ought to fix this problem.

Of course, the GDB crash is the more important problem.
