I set the variable using the line:
(add-hook 'LaTeX-mode-hook 'TeX-source-correlate-mode)

Hmmm, I've just gone back again to try it and it all seems to work
fine, so just adding the above line to my .emacs makes it work without
having to use C-c C-t C-s. Since having the original problems I've
updated to the latest version of emacs, so perhaps that made a
difference. Also, I'm no longer using the package pdfsync, since I
discovered that all that was needed was included would be in latex
anyway nowadays.

Anyway, thanks for the help, sorry for wasting your time I guess.
