I think this was just a misguided attempt to deal with the fact that
it is common on Solaris sytems to have two different toolchains
installed: the Sun-provided C compiler and Unix utilities; as well as
the GNU compiler and GNU tools. ./configure should be able to handle
this in a better way.

I don't see a problem but it might be desirable for example to
test for notangle (and build noweb if necessary) during ./configure
so that one can use notangle to extract the Makefile.in templates
etc. from the distribution pamphlet files.
