For the archives, and to give due credit, I'd like everyone to know  
that my problems were caused by me, forgetting to take the '128 out  
of ATmega103 compatibility mode (a fuse bit set in the extended byte).

Many, many thanks to Ned Konz. Peter Fuhrmann and David Kelly for  
suggesting that this was the problem. It appears to have solved a  
rash of problems. If any of you is in the Berkeley area, I'll buy you  
lunch and/or a beer.
