Just an info on my hardware:
CS4205 on Inspiron 8200 using snd-intel8x0 alsa module.
This hardware is not capable of mixing multiple pcm sources. And that's 
why I do need the dmix plugin functionnality to work.

I confirm what it works with several aplay running, even if I have 
strange xrun messages.

I'm sorry, I'm not a developper and I can't help you much more.
But I would be happy to help you to do some test.

I wish you will find a fix without too much work.
