I tested the same configuration and have no problems at all
(play/stop/pause/seek works, mplayer+xmms also). I still see, as Steve Leung
mentioned, that when using a dmix device, there are still references to it in
the calling process after stop (which closes the device leaving no references
to it usually). I've got: /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p: 2700m 2703m 2708m 2713m
which are xmms threads.

aplay doesn't use this part of the API either...

I'd like to but have no idea what your problem is :(
Do you know any alsa application that works with dmix nicely (e.g. alsaplayer,
zinf), so I can look at it's code ?
