Well, it turns out there _is_ a way to stop the rig from broadcasting (what
Icom call 'transceive mode' or 'TX mode'). It involves cutting D64 from the
diode matrix (i haven't tried this yet).

Sounds great, Joop. That would be an elegant fix. I won't butcher the rig
just yet :-)
