not sure if this applies, but perhaps sounds should be stored as
described in:

http://freedesktop.org/wiki/Specifications
which links to
-> http://freedesktop.org/wiki/Specifications/sound-theme-spec
and finally the spec itself
-> http://0pointer.de/public/sound-theme-spec.html
I didn't have time to read the whole thing, but I think on my computer
this leads to something like ~/.local/share/xboard/...

then there is also
http://www.pathname.com/fhs/pub/fhs-2.3.html
which list /usr/share/games/xboard/ as the correct place for e.g. sound
files.

Just as an reminder: paths shouldn't be hardcoded, but use the $datadir
from the configure script.
