+shkolla, ky qe hap i parë i rëndësishëm drejt dixhitalizimit. Por, kalimi

+Administrimi të Nxëni (LMS) që janë <em>software</em> pronësor. Këto
+programe jo të lira përdoren nga shoqëri zhvillimi software-i si armë

+të drejtave themelore të nxënësve dhe mësuese për liri dhe privatësi në
+punën me kompjuterat. Software-i jo i lirë është antitezë e arsimit,

+ndalon shkëmbimin e dijeve dhe është i konceptuar posaçërisht për ta

+<h2>The Dangers of Proprietary Systems in Online Teaching</h2>
+
+<p>Since March 2020, educational institutions all over the world have
+been forced to migrate their daily activities to online teaching due
+to the COVID-19 sanitary emergency. For many schools, this constituted
+a first important step towards digitalization. However, the
+transition to <strong>remote teaching has brought an unwelcome guest:
+nonfree software for classes online</strong>.</p>
+
+<p>Many schools have adopted video conferencing programs and Learning
+Management Systems (LMS) that are proprietary software. These nonfree
+programs are used by software development companies as weapons against
+students' and teachers' fundamental rights to computer freedom and
+privacy. Nonfree software is the antithesis of education since it
+forbids the sharing of knowledge and is specifically designed to
+prevent it. <strong>There should be no place for nonfree software in
+educational environments</strong>.</p>

+<p>Free learning resources, like free software, is a matter of freedom,
+not price. It's about bringing the principles of free software to
+general knowledge and educational materials. Knowledge should be usable
+and accessible to all without restrictions and should not be treated as
+property. It is not an article of consumer goods that decays over time or
+wears out with use like a pair of shoes. Knowledge is a naturally abundant
+resource that improves with usage: the more it is used and passed around,
+the more it grows for the benefit of all. The introduction of measures
+designed to favor the ownership of knowledge, tailored to prevent people
+from accessing, using or sharing knowledge, is a conspiracy to inhibit
+human progress.</p>
+
+<p>These principles on the freedom of knowledge have always been in the
+spirit of the GNU Project. In 1999, it formally introduced the concept of a
+<a href="/encyclopedia/free-encyclopedia.html">Free Universal Encyclopedia
+and Learning Resource</a>, which was fulfilled by the Wikipedia project.</p>

+ bring the benefits of free software to all groups involved in
+ education. It aims for a legal framework that prohibits

+ <dt><a href="http://guri.hipatia.net/">GURI</a></dt>
+
+ <dd>Guri is a group which was born inside an Italian High School as
+ the result of a program carried out by NGO Hipatia to raise awareness
+ about the role of free software in the education field. Guri opposes
+ the growing practice of treating knowledge as if it were a tangible
+ object subject to ownership. It fights to change the mainstream
+ cultural framework in Italy which prevents the exercise of some of
+ the most important human rights by posing dangerous threats to our
+ freedom such as software patents, unfair copyright laws, and the
+ adoption of proprietary, subjugating software.
+
+ <p>The goals of the Guri project are to convert the educational
+ system so that it is based exclusively on free software and to extend
+ the freedoms it grants to every field of knowledge. Guri believes in
+ the power of education to shape a better society by teaching students
+ the values of sharing and cooperation. It advocates and works towards
+ a non-pyramidal system to share knowledge as a fundamental good for
+ humanity, a system in which everyone can participate actively and
+ access knowledge without restrictions.</p>
+
+ <p>To achieve its goals, the group takes action mainly in High School
+ and University environments, organizing workshops and courses to
+ promote awareness about the ethical principles of free software.</p>
+ </dd>

+ <dt><a href="http://hipatia.net/">Hipatia</a></dt>
+
+ <dd>Hipatia is an international NGO (non-governmental organization)
+ that upholds the right of all human beings to access, use, create,
+ modify and distribute knowledge. It is formed by people from all
+ around the world who advocate the ideals of the free software
+ movement and work towards putting those principles into practice.
+ Hipatia emphasizes the importance of using free software in education;

+<h2>Resisting Proprietary Software</h2>
+

+<p>Teachers, students, parents, free software advocates and the
+community at large are taking action to stop the use of nonfree
+programs in schools. They are doing it by telling schools about
+<a
+href="/philosophy/free-sw.html">free software</a> and raising
+awareness of the dangers nonfree programs pose to students' computer
+freedom and privacy. They are objecting persistently to the nonfree
+software that the schools suggest to them.</p>
+
+<p>The recent health emergency situation caused by COVID-19
+presented a new challenge. Traditional in-person classes were
+suddenly disallowed, and overnight thousands of schools around
+the world were confronted with a decision to make: either
+suspend their teaching activities entirely or comply by switching
+to online classes.</p>
+
+<p>Schools from areas of the world where Internet connection and
+access to technology is readily available decided to go online.
+Unfortunately, most school administrators and teachers had never
+heard about free software, so they couldn't think of anything but
+whatever they knew or had already used—namely, freedom-denying
+programs for video conferencing and online communication such as
+Zoom and Skype, among others.</p>
+
+<p>It's no secret, however, that the
+<a href="https://www.eff.org/issues/student-privacy">
+companies that distribute these programs use them to collect
+personal data to profile their users</a><a href="#cloud">(1)</a>.
+These data, in turn, can be seized by the State. It is the moral
+responsibility of schools to protect their students from being
+spied on, but if the school fails to do so, students and their
+parents should object and not let it happen.</p>
+
+<p>More generally, <a
+href="/education/edu-schools.html">schools should reject
+all proprietary software</a> for a number of <a
+href="/education/edu-why.html">reasons</a>.</p>
+
+<p>The free software community responded by offering
+communication and videoconferencing programs that respect
+freedom and privacy, because staying away from health
+hazards is a duty, as it is to stay safe from nonfree
+software.</p>

+<h2>Teachers: Help Your Students Resist Zoom</h2>
+

+<p>When the global COVID-19 emergency began, schools switched to
+remote classes. The urgency of ensuring the continuity of classes left
+little space for debate on how to choose <a
+href="/philosophy/free-sw.html">software that empowers students to
+learn</a>. As a consequence, <a
+href="/proprietary/proprietary.html">freedom-denying and
+privacy-violating software</a> has seen widespread adoption in
+education.</p>
+
+<p>Zoom, a proprietary online conferencing program that is becoming
+more and more dangerously popular, is <a
+href="https://www.studentprivacymatters.org/what-you-need-to-know-about-zoom-for-education/">
+an example</a> of such harmful technology. <strong>Please don't ask
+students to install Zoom on their computers, or to use its web version
+which also runs Zoom code on their computers.</strong></p>
+
+<h3 id="to-all-teachers">To all those teaching remote classes with
+Zoom</h3>
+
+<p>It is unfortunate that you are using Zoom, a nonfree program that
+spies on users and takes away your students' computer freedom, along
+with your own. Using Zoom, students are dependent on a program that
+a company can unilaterally pervert. Their freedom to learn about
+technology and how it works is destroyed.</p>
+
+<p>If you direct your students to use Zoom, they may form a bad habit
+and continue using it beyond your classes, effectively surrendering
+their privacy over communication. They will not learn how to keep
+control of their data and computing.</p>
+
+<p>You can use free software like <a
+href="https://directory.fsf.org/wiki/BigBlueButton">BigBlueButton</a>
+and <a
+href="https://directory.fsf.org/wiki/Jitsi">Jitsi</a> for teaching
+remote classes without losing technical performance and, most
+importantly, without surrendering your students' freedom. By choosing
+these and <a
+href="/software/free-software-for-education.html">other free programs
+for education</a>, you are enabling motivated students to learn about
+the software they use everyday, and some of them one day will be able
+to adapt it to their needs, serving a larger community. Those who will
+not pursue such curiosity, will still benefit from using a program
+that respects their freedom and doesn't spy on them. They will
+develop the good habit of not throwing away their freedom, too.</p>
+
+<p>Choosing free software for your classes will positively impact
+life-long learning, a crucial skill for any student. In fact, students
+will learn that it is in their power to run, study, modify and share
+any free software they wish, according to their own curiosity and
+needs. In contrast, by adopting proprietary software, students are
+taught to become mere “consumers”<a
+href="#consumer" id="consumer-rev"><sup>[*]</sup></a> of a user
+interface, with no power over the technology they are using.</p>
+
+<p>If you independently opted for using Zoom in your classes, we urge
+you to switch to something more ethical.</p>
+
+<p>If Zoom was imposed on you by your school's administration, we
+encourage you to contact them and ask them to let you change to a free
+program. Ask other teachers for help, and explain <a
+href="/education/edu-schools.html">why</a> software freedom is
+paramount for education.</p>
+
+<h3 id="last-resort">Last resort</h3>
+
+<p>If you can't remove Zoom, we propose this temporary workaround only
+as a last resort so that students can take your class without feeling
+oppressed by Zoom. We do not recommend it as a stable, long-term
+solution.</p>
+
+<ol>
+ <li>A day or two before the class, post the visual materials in some
+freedom-respecting way, so students can download them. Any simple
+old-fashioned website is suitable for this.</li>
+
+ <li>Invite students to phone the Zoom server; tell them the phone
+number and the code for the conversation. That way they can listen to
+the audio of the session, while they follow the visual materials
+alongside.</li>
+
+ <li>Tell them that you regret the use of Zoom and show them which
+are the free programs to replace it. Direct them to <a
+href="/education/edu-why.html">
+https://www.gnu.org/education/edu-why.html</a> to see the reasons why
+proprietary software such as Zoom has no place in schools (or in any
+other aspect of life.)</li>
+
+ <li>If permitted, make a recording of the Zoom conversation of each
+session, and post it for the students in a freedom-respecting way
+soon after.</li>
+</ol>
+
+<p>If your school uses Zoom for examinations and students refuse to
+use it, then you, as a teacher, could arrange a different meeting in
+parallel or an alternative exam session using one of the free programs
+mentioned above. Another possibility is to set up a kiosk with a
+computer that has Zoom installed and let students take the exam using
+that computer. That way, they won't be forced to install nonfree
+software on their computers, and the use of Zoom will be limited to
+the exam. If you do this, we recommend that the school computer
+run a <a
+href="/distros/free-distros.html">free software distribution</a>.</p>
+
+<p>Simply by telling students about this possibility, which you can do
+more than once, you will help inspire <a
+href="/education/resisting-proprietary-software.html">resistance</a>
+to Zoom and other freedom-trampling programs, and avoid inculcating
+surrender.</p>
+
+<p>You will still be using Zoom, which is deleterious for your
+freedom. Some of your students will probably still be using Zoom,
+which is deleterious for their freedom. But, thanks to your efforts,
+some students will be able to avoid using Zoom, and that is a
+victory.</p>
+
+<p>This workaround is meant as a short-term solution to enable
+students to avoid Zoom now rather than wait for the next academic
+year. In the long-term, it is crucial to migrate to free/libre
+software and online conferencing programs like Jitsi and
+BigBlueButton.</p>
+
+<p>All software must be free, and this is a small step towards that
+goal. <a
+href="/philosophy/saying-no-even-once.html">Saying <em>NO</em> to
+unjust computing even once is progress</a>.</p>
