I'm not sure I'm understanding what I'm speaking about but wouldn't it
possible to use a 32 or 64 bits counter as identifier. Comparison is
ultra fast and creation of new identifier is also ultra-fast (just
increment a global counter). With a 64 bits counter, I'm pretty sure you
have enough identifiers for a document life-time.
