I amended the path to "gawk" in jrtangle and jrweave and now "make -C
texindex" gives the following:

make: Entering directory `/home/g/src/info-improvements/PROJ_SVN/texindex'
texi2dvi --pdf --build-dir=ti.t2p -o ti.pdf ti.texi
This is pdfeTeXk, Version 3.141592-1.21a-2.2 (Web2C 7.5.4)
 file:line:error style messages enabled.
