I use SuSE7.3 and get a very similar error

I don't think is specific to ASM2.2. I get this when as a non-root user, I
become root (usually to do a make install) and then, still as root, I try
to run a program that uses the screen. The solution is to remember to
stop being root. So if I run everything as root, or as a non-root user, I
don't have a problem, it's only when trying to mix the two.
