That is all too likely, as I did not explicitly specify any such flags
when rebuilding. I had assumed (incorrectly, it now seems) that
configure would add the optimizations without being told. Are the
flags listed in the standard Swarm README/INSTALL instructions?

Glad to hear it. I'll go into the office tonight and track down the
source of the problem.
