I've run vnc and like it quite a lot. With a windowsNT system as the
vncserver and a linux system as the viewer, I have no trouble. When
windows is the server, vnc lets you fire up a viewer and see and control
anything, as if you are on the machine itself.
With unix systems, the vnc server does not show the desktop: 0, rather,
it creates a new X server and shows a clean screen, so it is no good for
remotely checking on an application.
About 6 months ago I tried the xmove/Xvfb thing that Marcus describes,
but it was discouraging. The xmove package is not being
updated/maintained and after an afternoon of fiddling with it I did not
pursue it any further. One discouraging thing is that the xmove package
version beta2 was out 3 years ago and it appears to not have been
finalized.
