I sent a join message to mailbase and got a response back saying I
couldn't use join. So I sent a second one saying subscribe and that
worked. It may be using join that is the problem.

I think the reason for these messages is the following:-

Nigel Gilbert has moved the SIMSOC mailing list to a new address.
This means that the this mailing list at surry (address@hidden)
will be replaced by another (address@hidden).

You need to register with the new list since it will not be
automatically
updated with the current simsoc mailing list. To do this you need to
send mail to address@hidden with the folloing message:-

join SIMSOC first_name second_name

Nigel sent a message out recently covering all this but I think people
have
got confused and sent the message to address@hidden rather than
address@hidden consequently we all got their JOIN commands
distributed to us!

if you were one of the people who you JOIN command to
address@hidden
you need to do it again but sent it to address@hidden

ps. there will no doubt be a few more of these flying around - just
ignore them.

pps. hope this helps!
