_XOpenIM missing

Here's a tough one:

I get the message from the friendly ld.so telling me it can't find
_XOpenIM (specifically 'undefined procedure') when I try to run the demo apps.
The one in 'life' in particular.

I've tried including a path entry for every X11 library (a million of them
I think) we have sitting around, but it still wont run.  What could be
missing if
not the X libraries?
