The classic Law and Kelton: Simulation Modeling and Analysis
has a good description of a distribution of distributions,
including when they are typically used and their general
characteristics.
As I recall, its a description at the conceptual/math level,
not the implementation details (but I may be wrong and
there may be implementation details, too).
