It sounds like something may be screwing with your termios (stty)
settings. You might check to see if one of the apps you're using is
screwing with that; and also whether one screen window can exhibit this
problem while another does not.
You said "^? and ^t", but I'm assuming that you meant "^I" for tab, as
that's the usual designation.
