I know: It's available virtually everywhere, but is suboptimal. If

I assume you ran "TERM=putty screen" of course: Nonsense otherwise.

I see: Reconfigure PuTTY's backspace to default 127, disable ssh
backspace/delete swap, and verify "stty -a" prints "erase = ^?".

Here less backspaces OK when I type [backspace] or ALT+127, and
prints "^H" when I type ^H. Same outside and inside Screen. Less seems
to follow stty erase, if nothing in ~/.less(key) interferes.
