screen on linux console

When I run screen in a Linux console (not in X), and when I create new
screens (C-a C-c), my status line prints correctly, but I also get a
beep, and then this line printed:

;;0-$ bash

which pushes my status line up the screen by one line, and therefore
puts my cursor and prompt out of whack with each other. My status/
caption line is (mind wrapping):

caption always "%{wb}%H|%{-u} %-Lw%{+b by}%n%f %t%{-}%+Lw %=|%D %M %d
%c%-0<"
