Uh, couldn't you just bind ^ah to a group assignment command to a group called hidden?

Seems like it would require more keystrokes than simply ^ah to hide the
current window. Wouldn't you have to assign the current window to a
(hidden) group first? I haven't read the docs on it though so I don't
really know.
