I tried 'foo': it fails twice, then works the third time.
I repeated that process for three cycles, and it always
works the third time only.

I get exactly the same behavior with 'anoncvs', and also
with 'password'.

I get exactly the same behavior if I type 'a', then 'b',
then 'c': the third time, it works. Even if I type nothing
and only hit the Enter key, it works the third time.
