Hi,


Thanks for writing. We commend you for not being Linux capable, yet
deciding to setup a virtual machine and getting this far. Rest assured,
life gets better from this point, as you are free of proprietary
software restrictions and on your way to having an application which
will teach you a great amount about running a Web Server and Database
Server application in the land of Linux.

Now, as far as the make file goes. GNU remotecontrol can only be
automatically built and automatically installed with GNU make. You can
always manually run the SQL script and add the PHP files to your Web
Server. This is the preferred option, as you will not have to dig
through log files to find any path or permission problems on your
computer. If you are not proficient on GNU make, we recommend you shelve
the make file option for another day and step through the installation
process in the manual. Besides, if either your file system, Web Server,
or MySQL Server release an update since the publish of the GNU
remotecontrol make file, the make file might not be able to handle this
change and error out. We wrote the user manual so folks do not have to
suffer through dealing with an automation error caused by an update
beyond their control interfering with their installation of GNU
remotecontrol.

GNU remotecontrol does not support the setup or configuration of either
a Web Server or a MySQL Server. This decision is due to the liability of
risk associated with user permissions and firewall settings on user
computers. This is particularly true for a computer connected to an
untrusted network, such as the Internet.

Having said this, here is the walk through of what any system
administrator needs to accomplish with GNU remotecontrol.

If you need help to set up your Web Server, MySQL Server, or file system
permissions, divide and conquer with the help of someone who is familiar
with your particular distribution of Linux. Virtual boxes are a great
way to learn and safely try things. This is quite a smart move on your
part. However, there are also path and user permission problems which
tend to occur when VirtualBox does an installation. These problems are
identified in your log files telling you what is wrong and where the
problem is located.

If you can get your Web Server, MySQL Server, and PHP installed, you are
80% there on setting up your GNU remotecontrol. The rest is downhill.
