[remotecontrol] Software Installation Help

I have read the RemoteControl manual and although it contains very good information it does not tell me how to install the software. I have installed Ubuntu inside VirtualBox, I have downloaded the remotecontrol-1.1 tar files and unzipped to my root directory. However I am unable to execute the Makefile. I am new to Linux and after extensive Googling cannot find what I am doing wrong. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.
