I've never used BTRFS for anything, and I've heard enough mixed
reports from friends in my local LUG that I'm not sure I'd want my
first use to be as a backup repository.

To my thinking the real problem here was my not realizing that
rdiff-backup's design would cause there to be millions of old cache
files dating back years all in the same directory. Even if it were
less of an issue on other filesystems these files don't even need to
be backed up in the first place.
