Could the --force be the reason for my messed up backup? The reason I
used the --force flag is that I couldn't get it to backup otherwise. I
get this:

Fatal Error: Destination directory

/Volumes/Backup320

exists, but does not look like a rdiff-backup directory.  Running
rdiff-backup like this could mess up what is currently in it.  If you
want to update or overwrite it, run rdiff-backup with the --force
option.

I read your post regarding this

but was unclear whether to keep it on or just use it for the initial
backup. It is okay to use --force for the initial backup? Or is there
a special way to prepare the disk for rdiff-backups?
