1. Does order of starting ratpoison and xbindkeys matter ? Should it matter ?

It may matter. I always start xbindkeys from inside my ~/.ratpoisonrc
file.

2. is it a proble, with both grabbing the keyboard. In fact, I'ld be prefectly happy with ratpoison NOT grabbing the keyboard, and xbindkeys invking 'ratpoison -c ' on hot keys.

You can unbind all the default keybindings and use just xbindkeys, but
that would be much easier if we had a ratpoison -c command to dump all
current keybindings.

Ratpoison is meant to be very scriptable and Unixy. That means where
possible, instead of implementing every possible policy, it will let you
query it for information, and then let you run actual primitive commands
yourself. So you can abstract your own custom logic into shell scripts,
instead of bloating ratpoison itself. :) Heck, once ratpoison even had
themes, but by popular vote they were chucked out.
