You don't say what host architecture you're using, I assume x86-64
(aka amd64).
I can say for certain that qvm86 won't work on amd64 without significant
changes. For a start it doesn't support PAE, which is required in long mode.
Obviously you can use avm86 on amd64 hardware running a 32-bit kernel.

Looks like qemu isn't actually using avm86.
