I'd follow tmpfile(3)'s behavior: "Glibc will try the path prefix
P_tmpdir defined
in <stdio.h>, and if that fails the directory /tmp." Both for the precedent and
because hitting slow NFS-mounted disk by using the current working directory
would be crippling.
