Follow-up Comment #8, bug #57388 (project octave): I think the reason ellipses are used in Matlab is that rendering a 3-D surface on to a 2-D surface is similar to a topographic map used in hiking. In nature, the contours are curves rather than rectilinear lines, and I think they were trying for that similarity. I suppose the topographic map of the Great Pyramid at Giza would be squares inside squares, but that is pretty rare. But I agree that ellipses are a small thing which doesn't require fixing.
