Follow-up Comment #3, bug #50583 (project octave):

I came across the same issue whereby median([]) returns an error in Octave
while it returns NaN in Matlab. It seems that it was fixed with bug #48690 in
the statistics toolbox but scripts/statistics/median.m in Octave is still
unmodified.
