Follow-up Comment #4, bug #56986 (project octave):

It was indeed about how Moodle calls octave - they do use the --norc option.

After this was solved, the following warning appeared when starting octave: 

function /usr/share/octave/packages/statistics-1.4.0/distributions/binopdf.m
shadows a core library function


I have, for now, renamed the binopdf.m in the statistics package to avoid the
conflict.

Is there any reason to use one over the other?
