Follow-up Comment #22, bug #56976 (project octave):

Can you only reproduce this behavior after clicking in the command window,
somewhere after the cursor position? If you avoid clicking in the command
window entirely does pause work correctly for you?

If so, this may be another problem with the hack that was put in place to try
to move the cursor based on mouse clicks (see bug #55854 and bug #45003).
