i'd like something close to the full command line power of MH, when 
dealing with either a local Maildir store, or a remote IMAP store.

message numbers are, indeed, "the problem." when i asked mark crispen 
why IMAP was so hostile to the message numbering concepts of MH, he 
muttered something about MM.
