I had just had a better look at Matthias' log file and noticed this:

Changeset 2125:26475d357008 introduced "--with-libssh2", so it looks 
like Matthias' report is about this version. Looking further in the log 
file, I see that pkg-config failed to find libssh2. I would like to see 
tmp-curl/curl-7.23.1/config.log to figure out why. But the first 
question to answer is why there is no usr/installed/libssh2.
