It does seem sensible to revert to libpng 1.4 until the rest of the world catches up. Somehow I failed to realize that gdk-pixbuf was not the only incompatible package, otherwise I would not have bumped libpng up to 1.5. Sorry about that.

Just for fun I fished up the compatibility patch for wxwidgets:
