"no longer visible" is likely using the terminal's alternate screen (an
xterm feature imitated partly by other terminals). If you're using the
xterm which I maintain, you can use a menu entry to switch views between
the normal/alternate screens (at the bottom of the control-middle-mouse
"VT Options" menu). For the others - I don't recall that any of them
provide that ability.
While it's switched to the alternate screen, the normal screen is scrolled
up a line or two, but most of the page would be visible.
The alternative-screen feature is controlled by the terminal description,
so it is possible to suppress the switching.
