Apologies, I should have re-tested. The pattern used in the uninstall 
targets uses Make's "-" to suppress the error. So another possibility 
is:

    -test -f $(BINDIR)/lynx$x && mv -f $(BINDIR)/lynx$x $(BINDIR)/lynx.old
