I believe the problem is that the comments are not in valid
format. A legal comment is: <!-- something -->. Leaving
out the second pair of hyphens gives lynx the impression
that the entire page is part of the first comment. This is
a very common form of invalid HTML. Hitting the " ' "
(single quote) key switches lynx to a much looser comment
definition, and keeps the invalid comments from blanking the
page.
