Maybe something is writing -1 (which would appear like that) all over the
place into memory where it doesn't belong, including the stdio buffers.

Hmm, I think I have found the problem. <rant>The style code is a
mess. Of course it's my own fault to put "unsupported alpha code"
in the devel code and try to fix it.</rant> Try 2.7.1ac-0.83 when
it's available (not yet, probably noon).
