Please give an example for a "something" where that happens.
If it is a resource ("file") identified by a HTTP URL, what Lynx knows
about a file's content type (and possibly compression) comes from the HTTP
headers. Unfortunately those are often set wrong, or less than optimal.
Try -head or the ']' key.

The development code is trying to be a bit less aggressive in changing a
file suffix, in the case when the suffix would indicate compression but
the headers don't. But in any case Lynx is only trying to give a
reasonable suggestion for how to name the local copy, you can still change
the name to something else.
