I discovered the same thing the other day when using Screen, which won't
accept aliases from .cshrc (You have to set environment variables.).

I looked into the various CHANGES.* files, but I couldn't pin anything
down.

Barry Rountree posted a patch on Wed, 4 Jun 1997 to correct a glitch
in lynx2.7.1ac-0.28 that was defaulting lynx.cfg to .lynxrc under certain
circumstances.  To quote from him:

        When LYMain.c doesn't find lynx.cfg on the
        command line or as an environment variable,
        it then (erroneously?) looks for
        
                {$HOME}/.lynxrc  (or lynx.rc)
        
        instead of
        
                {$HOME}/lynx.cfg.
        
        If .lynxrc is found, then lynx_cfg_file
        is assigned "{$HOME}/.lynxrc" and the actual
        lynx.cfg file is ignored.

So I guess we need to wait-n-see or apply his patch to LYMain.c.
