Partially it was my own fault.  I did a "make -n install.libs" before
proceding to the real thing, to make sure I know where things would land.
Well that doesn't help much unless you then look at the output
carefully...  Duh.

From what I have seen, Tom and Jim have been very careful and conservative
in the changes to Lynx so far.  Of course checking where things get
installed ("make -n install") is always a good idea.  (It's an even better
idea to do that when you're awake...)
