I have not tested SLIP and Y2K myself, but an idea is that you might need to
hardwire DCD (data carrier detect) to DTE (data terminal ready) and DCE (data
set ready).
While you are at it why not wire RTS and CTS together aswell (if you are not
using hw handshaking of course)
