Latin modern "fi" ligature not appearing in the PDF

I have switched to the .otf versions of the latin modern fonts
<http://www.ctan.org/tex-archive/fonts/ps-type1/lm/fonts/opentype/ public/lm/> and now after pdf conversion I get "rst" instead of "first" in my document.

Indeed, I see warnings like these:

9,17: ignoring unencoded ligature character quoteleft.dup in font file /Users/ggreif/psres/lmr9.afm (line 56) 9,17: ignoring unencoded ligature character quoteleft.dup in font file /Users/ggreif/psres/lmr9.afm (line 86) 9,17: ignoring unencoded ligature character IJ in font file / Users/ggreif/psres/lmr9.afm (line 96) 9,17: ignoring unencoded ligature character ff in font file / Users/ggreif/psres/lmr9.afm (line 125) 9,17: ignoring unencoded ligature character f_k in font file / Users/ggreif/psres/lmr9.afm (line 125) 9,17: ignoring unencoded ligature character ij in font file / Users/ggreif/psres/lmr9.afm (line 128) 9,17: ignoring out-of-order kerning pair k a in font file /Users/ ggreif/psres/lmr9.afm (line 9002) 9,17: ignoring out-of-order kerning pair k aacute in font file / Users/ggreif/psres/lmr9.afm (line 9003) 9,17: ignoring out-of-order kerning pair k acircumflex in font file /Users/ggreif/psres/lmr9.afm (line 9010) 9,17: ignoring out-of-order kerning pair k agrave in font file / Users/ggreif/psres/lmr9.afm (line 9017) 9,17: ignoring out-of-order kerning pair k atilde in font file / Users/ggreif/psres/lmr9.afm (line 9019)

After a bit of googling I encountered

<http://home.wrede.ca/pipermail/lout-users/2005q1/003894.html>

which left me wondering if this particular problem might be the reason for
what I see.

Did this patch enter in a recent lout version?

Thanks in advance,

        Gabor
